Review of Aussie GP

Review of Australian GP – 6/3/2005

I thought this race sucked!! The new pit stop and tyre rules make pit stops about as exciting as pulling to the McDonalds drive through. Bernie, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? I fear F1 is losing what makes it the pinnacle of motor sport. Fisi drove a great race, but he really didn’t have any challenge at all. It was like pre-season testing for him. Open track all the way, all he had to do was keep it on the tar, and he was there. He got EXTREMELY lucky in qualifying with the weather, and I am looking forward to next race to see what he can do.

The new Qualifying rules are ok. I kind of feel like it dilutes the excitement of qualifying splitting it over 2 days like that. Also, my wife’s upset coz I now have to watch another hour of F1 per weekend. I still miss the excitment of the old format!

I think BAR’s tactic of pulling into the pits to circumvent the engine law was poor sportsmanship at it’s best, and I really hope Jenson puts it into the wall in Malaysia.

Ruebens was my driver of the day. He did very well to come from the mid field and finish second. Michael and Nick got a bit tangled, but all looks relatively fair, although in my opinion, if there has to be blame dished out, most of it should go Michael’s way. Heidfeld really had no where to go except grass there and the obviously his brakes won’t work on the grass. Unlucky for both.

Williams just didn’t look fast enough. Disapointing. Renault look to be a major thorn in Ferrari’s side this year if they keep their cars going and one or two more strokes of luck go their way.

Well done to Red Bull scoring 7 points. It’s good to see an underdog team doing well. We’ll see how well they fare next week.

I’m trying not to let the fact that I had to wake up at 4:00am influence my expectations of the race, but I was very disappointed. I hope things come right otherwise we’re in for a real yawn-fest this year. At least last year we had the priveledge of watching Michael set new records and drive like no one has ever seen before, stamping his dominance on the sport like few ever have in any official sport. This year, so far, I’m bleak.
